Vibrant Minimalism | Residence

Project Summary

A spacious house with maximum natural lighting and ventilation with no solid doors between the rooms with a clear budget.

Project Category: Residence
Project Location: Panayikulam, Ernakulam, Kerala
Client: Basheer AA
Site Area: 8.18 Cents (Including the old house)
Area: 1980 Sqft
Year Of Completion: December 2018

Located in suburban Ernakulam, Kerala, the rectangular plot faces a road to the southeast, with a vacant plot on the southwest, a neighboring house to the northeast, and the client’s old home at the rear. The previous house lacked natural light, prompting the client’s request: a spacious, naturally lit, well-ventilated home with no solid doors between rooms and a defined budget.

With around 4 cents of buildable land available, the ground floor was designed with a sit-out, living, dining, kitchen, and a courtyard between the kitchen and living areas. Spaces are divided by wide wall openings without doors, creating an open, continuous layout. Skylights and large sliding windows ensure ample daylight, while vertical cut-outs above the courtyard and dining area allow hot air to escape, promoting passive cooling.

The first floor, built over the access path, includes the master bedroom, bathroom, and laundry. A staircase from the dining area leads to an upper living space flanked by the master bedroom on one side and a second bedroom, skylight, and seating area on the other. Frosted glass sliding doors in the bedrooms allow light to flow into central areas. The upper living overlooks the courtyard through a skylit cut-out and opens to a semi-open balcony with sliding glass doors.

To ensure privacy and control sunlight, a CNC-cut perforated façade was used, along with vertical louvers on the southeast to buffer the laundry area. A crystal-glass skylight above the laundry brings in filtered light. The second floor houses a third bedroom, accessed via the main stairwell.

A “Vibrant Minimalism” palette defines the interiors—beige matte-finish tiles throughout, steel grey stone in the courtyard, glass flooring with white pebbles, and black granite for the sit-out and stairs. Furnishings use vibrant accents over neutral bases, with varied shades distinguishing each space.

Minimal landscaping in the front yard and along the courtyard edges enhances both indoor and outdoor aesthetics.
