Marianna | Residence
Project Summary
MariannaÂ
Situated in the peaceful residential area of Vypin, Ernakulam, this east-facing 14-cent plot provided an ideal foundation for a thoughtfully designed four-bedroom home. Surrounded by neighboring houses, the challenge was to create a private retreat that fosters openness, maximizes natural light, and promotes excellent cross-ventilation, blending comfort with sustainability.
The client envisioned a spacious, light-filled residence that balances privacy and openness. To achieve this, the design centers around courtyard planning, forming connected yet secluded spaces that invite nature inside while preserving a serene atmosphere.
An informal seating area framed by greenery welcomes visitors from the east and leads into a modest foyer featuring a prayer wall, serving as a spiritual and visual focal point. To the north, the living and dining rooms are bright and airy, with expansive windows overlooking a private courtyard that blurs indoor and outdoor boundaries while maintaining privacy.
Behind the dining area, the kitchen connects seamlessly to a second, semi-open courtyard. This space links the kitchen to the master bedroom and ensures ample daylight and airflow throughout the home’s core. The southern wing contains two spacious bedrooms with attached bathrooms, connected by a study nook bathed in gentle natural light—perfect for quiet work or reading.
A staircase positioned behind the prayer wall ascends to the first floor, where terracotta clay pots and a circular skylight enhance thermal comfort and natural illumination in the foyer and stairwell. The upper level hosts a cozy family lounge, two additional bedrooms, and a balcony overlooking the courtyard, reinforcing a strong visual and spatial connection within the home.
The careful placement of windows and courtyards ensures abundant natural light and ventilation, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and air conditioning. The minimalist exterior is paired with a warm, subdued interior palette, blending built-in and movable furniture in earthy tones to create a harmonious and functional living space.
Each area—from the entrance to the upper balcony—is designed to evoke tranquility, encourage natural flow, and celebrate simplicity, marrying aesthetic clarity with practical intelligence to craft a home that feels both grounded and uplifting.
